One of the toughest challenges we face as parents is helping our children avoid the peril of alcohol, tobacco and other drug use. Young people today are especially vulnerable.

Schools stress the dangers of using alcohol, tobacco or other drugs, but peer pressure and advertising can encourage kids to try these substances. We, as parents, play a critical and essential role in the prevention effort.

Educating ourselves, working with other parents and the schools will help us help our children avoid substance use. Try to accept that there will be times when your kids won't like what you say- or will act as though they don't like you. Be consistent. Hold your ground. Our children need and WANT our guidance.
