Many parents hesitate to discuss alcohol, tobacco and other drug use with their children. Some of us believe that our kids won’t use alcohol, tobacco or other drugs. Others delay because we don’t know what to say or how to say it, or we are afraid of putting ideas into our children’s heads.
Don’t wait until you think there is a problem. Educate yourself and your children. Spend time together and make sure your family rules on alcohol, tobacco and other drug use are firm and clear.
Many young people in treatment programs say that they had used alcohol, tobacco or other drugs for at least 2 years before their parents knew about it.
You can learn more about this in our booklet: “A Parent’s Guide for the Prevention of Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Use”, pages 17-19 and in our “Online Parent’s Guide” e-Learning Course – Sections- “Communication”, “Brain 101” and “Other Negative Effects”.
