Parties or “get-togethers” are a big part of the middle/high school social scene. They can be an enjoyable way for kids to meet and socialize. However, without proper planning and careful supervision, these events can be a disaster waiting to happen.
It is important for us, as parents, to stay involved in our adolescents’ social life, even when they get into high school and their “get-togethers” become more frequent and involve their going to the homes of parents whom we do not know.
Knowing the guidelines for planning and supervising social events will help us keep those occasions both fun and safe for our children.
You can learn more about this in our booklet: “A Parent’s Guide for the Prevention of Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Use“, pages 20-24 and in our “Online Parent’s Guide” e-Learning Course Section “The Social Scene“.
