What are our children saying? “Help me.”
We surveyed a representative group of teens asking their thoughts about substance abuse prevention as we began to work on the booklet “A Parents’ Guide for the Prevention of Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Use“. Their responses inspired us to educate ourselves so that we could help our own children.
What do you want your parents to tell you about alcohol, tobacco and other drugs?
“Everything they know.” “What alcohol and other drugs did to their friends.” “Let us know the dangers early in life so we won’t have to find out on our own.”
What do you want your parents to do if they suspect you are using?
” Help me.” “Search my room for alcohol, tobacco and other drugs- test me- find out the source.”
What do you want your friends to do if they think you have a problem?
“Get me help.” “Call my parents.” “Help me cope….stop me.”
What do you want the school to do if you get caught using alcohol, tobacco or other drugs?
“Help me- get me to rehab.” “Suspend me.” “Expel me.” “Give me a second chance.”
Our kids are asking for our help.
