Who Are We?
In response to a real need for a publication that could help both parents and students gain a better understanding of alcohol, tobacco and other drug use, in 1997 a committee of parents from Georgetown Preparatory School in Bethesda, MD, under the leadership of Mimi Fleury, then President, Parent Board, compiled a booklet, “A Parent’s Guide for the Prevention of Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Use”© which was published in 1999.
The overwhelming positive response to the booklet by many families led Dr. James Power, Headmaster, and Mimi Fleury to form the Community of Concern not-for-profit consortium in order to share the booklet. The booklet has spread in a grass-roots fashion and there are over 1,900,000 booklets in parents’ hands in 36 states and 4 countries. The e-Learning course here on this website is a companion to the booklet.
The original booklet has been revised and updated 8 times, most recently 2014.
“A Parent’s Guide for the Prevention of Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Use”© has been reviewed by Marisa Silveri, Ph.D., Asst. Professor of Psychiatry, Dept. of Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School,
